Mee Memorial hosts festive dinner and awards Dr. Hyde

South County Magazine (January 2010)

In addition to hosting a festive holiday event for its employees and guests, Mee Memorial Hospital CEO Lex Smith took the opportunity to announce the Employee of the Year and the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award.

Employee of the Year is Deryl Day in the engineering department.  “That man is everywhere whenever we need him,” said Smith.

Dr. Duane Hyde was honored for his lifetime achievements.  “Dr. Hyde is one of the pioneers of medicine in King City, and at 86 years old is the only surviving member of the original Southern Monterey County Medical Group.  He recruited both Drs. Greenberg and Schindelheim to King City,” said Smith.  “His efforts helped to build and open Mee Memorial back in the early 1960s.  His career here spanned nearly 40 years, and he and his wife are still active with the Foundation and in the community.”

Dr. Roy Schindelheim, Mee chief of staff, added a few comments, talking about how the land for the hospital build in the ‘60s and the clinic was donated by Dr. L.M. Andrus.  “The original doctors, including Dr. Hyde went out and knocked on doors to help raise money for the construction, seeking matching funds through a federal Hill Burton grant.

“To prove the seriousness of the need, each doctor, including Dr. Hyde, donated one-half the cost of his individual home.”

After the fundraising and construction were completed “and just a few short days after the hospital opened, and the bassinets were installed, Dr. Hyde delivered triplets—vaginally!” noted Schindelheim.

“Dr. Hyde regularly served as chief of staff—elections were often held while he was on vacation, so he would usually return from a restful trip only to find that he has once again been voted in.”

As for his additional medical duties, Dr. Schindelheim said, “During the hospital’s early days, the road from Salinas to King City was precarious (two land), so there was always plenty of trauma patients to care for, and during that time Dr. Hyde regularly performed as a surgeon, Anesthesiologist and orthopedic surgeon.”
When he received the award, Dr. Hyde commented, “I always wanted to be a family physician in a small town.  I have thoroughly enjoyed King City or I wouldn’t be here 20 years after I retired.”

Smith also honored the retiring trustees, Jeff Pereira and Claude Hoover, “both did great service to the hospital.”
