Do-Gooders arrested in fundraising effort for digital mammography equipment
Last Friday, Do-Gooders were arrested and held at Mee Memorial.
Usually when people are arrested, the connotation is bad, but in this case, those arrested and held in jail at Mee Memorial were community members known for doing good.
The annual Do-Gooders event organized by the Mee Memorial Hospital Service League started bright and early when the Do-Gooders were served their last meal, were dressed like prisoners- pin stripes in-all, read their rights and locked in jail until they raised the bail of $5,000 each for all six members.
Community members Jim Hearne, Sharlene Hughes, Tim Maxwell, Chris Davis, Karen Antle, and Danny Silveria volunteered their Friday in attempts to raise money; this year specifically to contribute to the digital mammography equipment the community has helped with and the hospital hopes to purchase this year. This year’s Do-Gooders were given a South County Yellow Pages phone book and used their cell phones to call as many people as possible to contribute to their $5,000 target.
Seven Year Service League member Ermalene Plaskett said, “We started this about five years ago and it is the biggest fundraiser the service league puts on. We voted on it and it sounded good for us to give a try.”
The idea originated from Ilda Venegas that had relatives down south. She helped the idea flourish and take place.
Though there was originally five prisoners, this year there are six. Plaskett said, “We had a lot of interest so we made space for one more person. If we call them (volunteers) and say we can’t do it, sometimes they’ll say call me next year.”
