The Mission of Mee Memorial Hospital’s Service League is to aid with community healthcare and support ALL Mee Memorial medical facilities. This group of women and men take that mission statement seriously.
These dedicated volunteers man (or "woman" to be more exact) the gift shop and the information desk in the hospital lobby; provide thousands of dollars every year to Mee Memorial for needed equipment; support the employees; and comfort patients and their families. Over the course of a year, the Service League donates in excess of 5,000 volunteer hours.
It’s What We Do
Usually people who come to the hospital have questions, whether they are a visitor or patient. For many hours of the day a friendly Service League member occupies the front desk, available to answer questions such as "Where do I go for a mammogram?" "How do I find out if someone has been admitted to the hospital?" or even "I need a cup of coffee, where is the cafeteria?"
The list is long of the support the Service League has given the hospital through its donations. Recently that includes major funding for a new digital mammography machine, state-of-the-art dialysis equipment, fetal monitors, and furnishings for the new hospital chapel.
At a June installation, new officers were installed for Mee Memorial Hospital Service League. Donna Oliveira has taken over as president; Anita McKean, vice president and president-elect; Hazel Mitchell, treasurer; and Janice Grim as treasurer. Other board members include Carolyn Ramos, Inez Diaz, Bea Hayes, Jo Koester, Sharon Warren, Nancy Solari and Sally Wiley.
The installation luncheon was held at St. Mark’s Guild Hall in King City with Bea Hayes preparing a gourmet luncheon.
Before the luncheon, Lex Smith, Mee Hospital CEO, gave an update on the hospital and thanked all the Service League members for their hundreds of hours of volunteer service and substantial monetary support for new equipment purchases, the most recent being $39,000 toward the new dialysis equipment, which costs about $160,000.
Service League Gets Good Start
January 1977 -- Groundwork was well established and activities set in motion Tuesday at the organizational meeting of the Service League for Mee Memorial Hospital. All SoMoCo women were invited to attend the planning session and about 40 were present. Following a coffee and refreshment break, officers elected were: Mrs. Steve Hogan and Mrs. Bill Whitney, chairpersons; Mrs. William Goenne, secretary-treasurer; Mrs. Elmer Tognetti, membership chairperson. The beginning services will now be chosen and hours scheduled for activities. Although the Service League is now a going concern, there is a place for any woman of the area to be of service and membership is open. There was even some discussion about including interested men in the group.
